Afreeca finally ends their six-match losing streak

On the 9th (KST), Afreeca Freecs managed to pull off a 2-0 victory against Griffin. This was Round 2 of the 2020 LCK Spring and effectively put an end to Afreeca’s long-running losing streak. Even though Griffin was on the losing side, their entry to the LCK Relegation Tournament is still almost guaranteed.

Afreeca Freecs’ match in summary

This match occurred shortly after T1 faced off against SANDBOX Gaming (and the former likewise won). When AF fought Griffin, this was something of a liberating victory. In game one, Jelly’s Alistar was pivotal throughout the match. He kept to the frontlines and proactively brought the fight to Griffin. Utilizing an incredible chain of abilities during the teamfight by the Dragon pit, AF quickly gained momentum from which Griffin could not recover. They went straight for Dragon Soul and Baron Nashor, which snowballed into AF’s first victory.

During game two, AF pulled off a victory when defeat seemed close. Griffin held the lead for much of the beginning until about midway through the game. AF managed to show more focus and picked up the pace sufficiently to turn the tide and snag a 2-0 victory from an otherwise formidable team.

Despite Afreeca Freecs’ extensive losing streak, they are still ranked sixth place in the LCK Spring standings.

Post-match interview

Kiin and Jelly sat down for a post-match interview on the official LCK broadcast. Said Jelly, “We’ve been setting a grand record in another way, so I’m really glad that we were able to stop the losing streak.”

Jelly had been rather bold in initiating fights with Alistar. When questioned about how the team communicated Jelly starting teamfights, he said, “In the fights where I went in first, I told them that I’m going to go in first when I see a good angle to go in. If I have Flash, I go in first, and my teammates follow me.” This is just one example of the team’s ability to coordinate and trust one another in finding a winning strategy.

Afreeca Freecs were very close to being sent to the Relegations Tournament. But by securing this victory, they may yet secure a spot in the playoffs. Kiin remarked about this with, “Although our team’s recent performances have been very poor, I feel like with this win, a lot of weight has been lifted off our shoulders, so I think we can enjoy the rest of our upcoming matches.”

It does indeed look like AF can relax now that the losing streak is over with. But even the playoffs is no guarantee.
