TikTok teams up with Collegiate StarLeague to announce esports event

Short-form video platform TikTok has announced a partnership with Collegiate StarLeague to create a new esports event: the TikTok Cup. This event spans across four esports titles, including Fortnite, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Rocket League. The tournament offers approximately $60,000 in prize pool funds. Additional prizes will also be distributed to players who submit TikTok videos for judging, some of which may also be shown during the tournament broadcast.

Esports and TikTok

TikTok is an app that has quickly grown in popularity among gaming influencers and esports teams alike. Top organizations that use the app include 100 Thieves, FaZe Clan, and Team SoloMid, all of whom are active members on the platform.

About the tournament(s)

The TikTok Cup is a team and school-based esports tournament expected to begin on May 9. The event consists of eight tournaments, two for each game. The initial qualifying matches take place May 9-10 and May 17-18. After this, it goes to the main tournament events. Final matches for all four games stream during May 11-14 and May 18-21 and may be viewed on the Collegiate StarLeague twitch channel.

“Collegiate StarLeague is thrilled to collaborate with the TikTok team to give collegiate gamers the opportunity to create their own content celebrating the intersection of esports, gaming, and the joy of creating TikTok videos,” says Wim Stocks, CEO of Collegiate StarLeague. “We’re excited to see what sort of creative videos players come up with – huge thanks to TikTok for this wonderful partnership.”

Out with the old

This announcement comes very shortly on the heels of former CEO Duran Parsi’s departure from CSL. He announced on April 24 that he was leaving for new adventures, though nothing official could be shared. However, he did have a link to share with a story about his time at CSL.

About the video-sharing contest

Additional to the tournament is the video-sharing contest. Esports fans are encouraged to create and upload gaming- or esports-related videos via TikTok. Participants must also tag the official StarLeague account as well as the hashtag #TikTokCupContest. On May 22, fifty winners will be selected. Winners receive a price pack that contains gaming gear and merchandise valued at around $100. Here is the full list of rules and eligibility requirements.
