BBC Sport broadcasting Rocket League European Spring Series

Provided by Psyonix

BBC Sport has announced that it will broadcast the Rocket League European Spring Series across its website, application, and BBC iPlayer. The event takes place on BBC Sport’s properties from May 9 through 10.

About the event

Due to the difficulties created by the Coronavirus pandemic, Psyonix has decided to hold the Rocket League Spring Series. The entirety of the event will take place online across four regions. Teams participating in this are located across Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America.

The European Spring Series began with open qualifiers from May 5 through 6. Now that those have been taken care of, the official event starts on May 9. During this, eight best-of-five matches will be broadcast to eliminate two teams. During the following day, the playoffs will take place, including a best-of-seven final series.

Words from BBC Sport

Ben Gallop, Head of Digital for BBC Sport included a statement with the announcement. He said, “Rocket League is one of the most exciting esports in the gaming world and to have the European Spring Series live on the BBC’s digital platforms is something we’re really pleased to be able to offer, especially for our younger audiences.

“BBC Sport is constantly evolving and a time like this gives us the chance to do even more with esports, as well as looking ahead to see what’s possible in the future.”

This is a major milestone for esports. Given the absence of traditional sports, the esports industry has boomed significantly as broadcasters turn to this sector to provide entertainment. It would be nice to see opportunities like these continue to arise even after traditional sports return. But events like these are proving that esports is an industry worthy of recognition and that people will watch broadcasts.
