Gamers Without Borders to host Dota 2 charity tournament with $1.5 million prize pool

International charity competition Gamers Without Borders has announced that it will be hosting a Dota 2 event this weekend. The prize pool? A cool $1.5 million in charity funds. This initiative first started last month and has pledged to donate a total of $10 million to charity organizations that combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

This is a major tournament and will feature some of the biggest names in the Dota 2 esports industry.

The event features eight teams in Europe and the CIS region:

  • Team Liquid
  • OG
  • Team Secret
  • Alliane
  • Ninjas in Pyjamas
  • Virtus.pro
  • Team Nigma
  • Natus Vincere

The event, titled Gamers Without Borders 2020 Dota 2, will take place between May 15 through the 17. All matches are planned to be streamed via Twitch and will feature some impressive match-ups. The competitors will likewise be playing to raise awareness for Coronavirus relief charity foundations.

The teams competing will be playing for the right to choose which partnered organization that GWB will donate $1.5 million to at the end of the event. For the moment, this includes charities like United Nations Children’s Fund, Direct Relief, and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliane.

For this Dota 2 tournament, GWB decided to focus on the European and CIS regions. It believes that pulling from this pool of top teams it will bring the biggest possible audience for the charity stream. Only two teams herald from the CIS region, whereas the remaining six come from European contenders.

The action begins at 5am CST on May 15. The full schedule will be revealed closer to the first match.

Upon the conclusion of the tournament, GWB and its partners will finally announce where the donations are being sent. Following this, they will announce the fourth title in the charity esports tournament initiative.

During the previous tournament, Rainbow Six, the winners (The Ultimates) donated their share to King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.
