RIOT GAMES CONSIDERS RESUMING LCK WITH ONLINE MATCHES

South Korea’s League of Legends league (LCK) is still postponed, and there is no indication of whether this will resume before the end of the Spring Split. But in an effort to resume the competition, Riot Games is considering all possibilities, as indicated by a statement given to Inven Global.

Riot’s statement: In this note from Riot, it says, “Although resuming LCK was not decided, we are checking out every possibility including online matches with considering how many matches left and how many days we might have.” Considering online matches as a possible solution would make sense given that it’s the strategy currently being employed by the LPL.

The state of the league: The LCK’s Spring Split was originally slated to end on April 12 after 10 weeks of matches. Five of the 10 weeks took place in the LCK arena without a live audience. Amid the Coronavirus epidemic, the league played several weeks of offline matches without a live audience. However, when host Kim Mina came down with symptoms similar to the Coronavirus (though they tested negative), the LCK quickly cancelled post-match interviews followed shortly by the league itself. If a decision is made soon by Riot Games, it may still be possible for the teams to compete for five weeks before the Spring Splits playoffs. As it is, the Mid-Season Invitational has already been postponed to July, so there’s still room in the calendar to squeeze more matches in.

Other leagues: China’s LPL was postponed for several weeks before resuming with online matches. The league resumed last week and just started with its English broadcast over the weekend. As for LCS and LEC, matches are still postponed due to Coronavirus concerns. The number of positive cases has grown incredibly across Europe and the United States for the past week. As of today, the United States has more than 3,000 cases, whereas Germany has around 4,800.

More information about these leagues is expected to follow in the coming days.
