This just in: NBA is taking the NASCAR approach to off season by setting up an exclusive players-only NBA2K tournament to start this Friday. NBA stars like Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond, and Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell are committed to the event so far.
According to Yahoo Sports, the tournament air on ESPN over the course of ten days. This is a no-brainer team up between the league and the broadcasting network, as NASCAR and FOX broke viewer records with their own esports invitational tournament last week. According to early numbers, 903,000 people tuned in to see racing stars take each other on in a virtual setting, making it the most-watched esports event in the U.S. to this date.
The NBA has been actively involved with building the NBA2K League, which has experienced its own starts and stops since inception. It’s very possible that this Players Only tournament will give the league the boost it needs to sustain itself after the NBA season restarts.
We don’t have all the details yet on this exciting NBA2K tournament as sources say they are still in development, but you can be sure we’ll cover it all right here at SlashShout.
