Fortnite hits 350 million players and plans virtual party

According to an Epic Games announcement on Wednesday, Fortnite now has more than 350 million registered players. This makes the free-to-play battle royale game one of the most popular video games ever made, joining the ranks of such noteworthy titles as Minecraft.

Player statistics

With regard to how many of those players actually log in every day of the month, we can’t rightly say since Epic doesn’t release those stats. But they did share that during the month of April alone, players logged more than 3.2 billion hours on Fortnite.

The last player count stat shared by Epic was around 250 million during March 2019. What this means is that the game is still growing a year later from those stats, and two and a half years beyond the game’s initial release. Part of this is due to the game’s availability across all platforms, including PC, console, and mobile, in addition to Epic Games continuously updating the game with new content to engage with players.

Celebrating the milestone with a party

After its massively-popular Travis Scott concert last month and last Friday’s Diplo show, Epic now plans on hosting a mini music festival featuring DFs Dillon Francis, Steve Aoki, and deadmau5. This event takes place May 8 at 9pm EST.

The developer most recently added “Party Royale,” a gun-free social space in the game set on a smaller island where players are allowed to log in and hang out with friends, watch concerts, and engage in theme park activities. This is all part of Epic’s plan to create a massive social network that lives entirely within the game’s world.

The mode is currently in beta, but it officially launches on May 8, alongside the aforementioned premier party.

Attracting a massive audience

In comparison to real gigs that play to an audience of several hundred to a few thousand, Fortnite attracts audiences that number into the millions for its concert events. Last year, Marshmello played to an audience of 10 million in the game. The recent performance by Travis Scott, on the other hand, drew in a crowd of 12 million and propelled his single with Kid Cudi, The Scotts, to the top of global streaming charts.
