And then there were four.
The LCS Spring Split Playoffs have narrowed down its competition as the Golden Guardians and 100 Thieves exit the bracket.
On Monday, April 7th, Flyquest swept the Golden Guardians in a 3-0 victory. Coming from a devastating 3-1 loss in the upper bracket against Evil Geniuses, Flyquest looked to keep their playoff chances alive. On the flip side, the Golden Guardians had clutched the last spot into the postseason by defeating teams Dignitas and Immortals in the tiebreaker matches.
Despite hanging on for over 40 minutes in game 1, the Golden Guardians were quickly swept off of their feet in the remaining 2 matches. GGS jungler Can “Closer” Çelik’s was able to secure early bot-lane ganks and the first two drakes in game 3, but the remainder of his team were outmatched by Flyquest’s strong laning phase. Flyquest midlaner Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage delivered a masterclass performance with just a single death throughout the series. He received the Player of the Series award for his dominant performances on LeBlanc and Kassadin.
The second lower-bracket set occurred on Wednesday, April 8th as 5th-seeded TSM faced the 3rd-seeded 100 Thieves, each hoping to continue their postseason run. The first two games featured the exact same matchups as both teams opted to keep their compositions. While 100 Thieves faltered in the opening match, they quickly rebounded to win their runback. 100T duo Li-Yu “Cody Sun” Sun and William “Stunt” Chen opted to run the Miss Fortune/Nautilus botlane for the entire series, pulling ahead with a 2-1 series score. However, TSM was able to win the subsequent match in dominant fashion, forcing a final game 5.
While the 100 Thieves drafted a powerful frontline composition with Sett and Sejuani, TSM drafted Xayah/Rakan in the final game— two champions that the team had gone 5-0 with in the regular season. Support player Vincent “Biofrost” Wang’s aggressive initiations on Rakan, followed by midlaner Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg’s clutch plays on Zoe, allowed TSM to claw their way out of a gold deficit and close out the series. The Player of the Series award went to the Danish veteran as he earned a combined 7/1/17 statline on Zoe.
The LCS Spring Split postseason continues on Saturday, April 11th as the top-2 seeded teams Cloud9 and Evil Geniuses face off in the upper bracket finals. TSM faces Flyquest in the lower bracket on Sunday, April 12th.
