Amidst the Coronavirus, many individuals now find themselves stuck at home with little to do. That is, little more than watching TV or playing video games. And it’s the latter that many people find themselves engaging in. As evidence of this, Rocket League has broken its previous peak with a new high record for player count, nearly 500,000 users.

Rocket League’s latest records

The spike saw the game reach nearly 500,000 users. This pushes Rocket League into the top 10 games being played on Steam right now. The platform itself continues to witness incredible player counts as well. As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to progress, Steam averages around 18 million users per day.

On the Steam platform alone, the player count for Rocket League peaked at 119,124. This is nearly a nine percent increase over figures last month. Rocket League typically retains a player base of around 30,000 average users every month since September 2016. It’s dropped below that threshold twice since since then.

Where the player counts come from

Rocket League witnessed its first jump in player counts as of December 2019. At this point, it was just shy of 40,000 players, a 22% increase for that month. As for 2020, the game has kept above 40,000 players consistently on Steam, leading up to the latest record.

Before this latest peak, the game’s highest point was April 2016. At this time, it hit 102,684 concurrent players. Afterward, a sharp decline occurred to 58,210 players the next month. These numbers all apply specifically to Steam, as shown by data from SteamCharts. Additional growth is expected to occur as social distancing continues to affect people across the world.

According to Corey Davis, SVP of game development for rocket League, across all platforms, the game has reached nearly 500,000 players. This is shown via a “Players Online” tracker that appeasrs on the playlist menu on the PC. Platforms tracked includes PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch players.

It’s doubtful that the game will surpass established titles like GTA V and Rainbow Six Siege. But the milestone of breaking into the top 10 games is a pretty impressive thing for Rocket League.
